The Deposition from the Cross a religious subject used by artists to imagine the scene of Christ's body when it was taken off of the cross by his attendants and mother. Its a pitiful subject used to highlight the love of a mother to son. Interestingly enough this story is not a part of scripture found in the Bible, making this subject an artist'southward imagining rather than a subject taken from scripture. This discipline runs through the history of Western Art, specifically through the Italian Renaissance.

There is a lesser-known painting of this subject done by the Italian artist Jacapo da Pontormo. His piece of work The Deposition from the Cross (c. 1525–1528) is located in Florence Italy in the Capponi Chapel of the Church of Santa Felicita. The artwork was restored to its sometime glory in May of 2018 and highlights the expressive color that Pontomro was known for in his career.

What makes this work and then intriguing are the bright and dynamic colors Pontormo used aslope the flourishing and swirling dress of the individuals depicted. It's a dramatic image and 1 that highlights the death of Christ against the despair of his mother and his followers.

With the loftier drama of the Mannerist movement and the colors of the latter part of the Renaissance make this painting a bridge between art periods. Traditionally Fine art History categorizes and separates artwork into different periods and classifications. Its a tricky part of how we sympathise fine art, as sometimes artists would not hold with such definitions or some artworks can exist in different art periods simultaneously.

Pontormo exists between such categories, he takes inspiration from one and then moves into the next, if we presume that such art periods are valid in how we understand art. Either definition works though every bit we view art through our mod viewpoints.

Extra fleck of Trivia: The human being painted on the right hand of the artwork with the brownish hat and clothing is a cocky-portrait of Pontormo! He definetly stands out with his neutral colored clothing.
