How Many Kwh Does A Phone Charger Use

CNET

I'm on a mission, and that mission is to save on my power bill. I've already washed the obvious stuff, similar replace lightbulbs -- especially the 500W halogens floodlights I have outdoors -- with depression-power LEDs, and I'm being more careful every bit to how I use heating and cooling. But along with making large changes, I've also been looking at but how much power all the random stuff I accept plugged in uses.

A while back, I looked at how much ability smartphone chargers consumed when there wasn't a smartphone attached to them. Now let'due south look at how much power it takes to accuse a smartphone for a twelvemonth.

At present, the proper way to do this exam would be to measure the power consumption over a year. Well, I want results quicker than that, so I'd have to do shorter periods of real-world testing and extrapolate out the results, which shouldn't be a trouble.

And then, here's what I did rather than go on detailed charging note for a year, or find how much power it took just to charge the bombardment from 0 percent to 100 percent, and try to fudge that into some real-earth figure. I replicated what near people do and put my smartphone on to charge overnight and measured the nightly power consumption.

I chose this method for two reasons:

  • Information technology's a usage pattern that matches how many people use their device
  • Information technology is more existent-globe, since when the device is on charge overnight, not merely is power being used to charge the bombardment, only as well to run the device (think, your device is doing stuff in the background like checking email), and so this goes beyond just measuring the power used to charge the battery

Ability consumption was measured using a WattsUp? PRO power meter.

My test subject was the iPhone 6 Plus, which had the biggest battery that Apple offered at the fourth dimension of my test. I'm besides a pretty heavy user, and this meant that going all day was sometimes catchy (the things I exercise for you). This ways that my results are going to exist at the high-stop, and that more restrained smartphone users are going to have a smaller power pecker.

And then here's what I found.

During an overnight charge, the iPhone consumed an average of xix.ii Wh.

Co-ordinate to figures published by the United states of america Free energy Information Administration for July 2018 (the latest figures currently avaialble), the average cost per kWh in the United states was $0.thirteen.

Remember that ane kWh equals ane,000 Wh.

And so, have our average of nineteen.2 Wh per day, multiplying that past 365 days, we get 7 kWh, which works out at $0.91 a year.

So if you lot guess under a dollar, well washed.
